With children becoming increasingly digitally literate, and a recent survey revealing that almost two thirds of nine to 16 year olds have a social networking profile, a unique programme is helping primary school pupils to learn the essential skills required to enjoy social networking safely and responsibly.

Safe is a national programme that gives primary pupils a real-life way of learning e-safety through social networking. By using practical activities to develop their skills, self-confidence and safety awareness online, Safe helps to ensure pupils are equipped with the knowledge to understand potential risks and the skills to manage their digital footprint, and has already benefitted 40,000 pupils nationwide. What’s more, the programme is free to schools, with optional paid-for training, certificates, badges and additional resources available to support the programme further.

The Safe programme enables primary schools to deliver
fun activities which develop pupils’ digital literacy skills

By teaching pupils to ask important questions before they share information online – such as who will see what I share? What personal information am I sharing? And, is this the best place for me to share things? – Safe aims to help them develop their ‘internal capacity’ to protect themselves, feel confident and spot danger online. On completion of the programme, pupils gain a certificate in Social Networking Safety certificate as evidence of their learning.

Furthermore, the Safe programme enables teachers and local authority staff to gain the skills, confidence and resources required to offer Safe to future classes and to help spread best practice to other schools.

Tim Riches, CEO of DigitalME, the social enterprise behind the Safe programme, comments:

“Because the age at which children are using social networking is getting younger all the time, we believe it is essential that we teach the skills they need to stay safe online at an early age.

“Safe enables teachers to educate children about the responsible use of social media through fun and engaging online challenges.”

Safe brings together the free social network for schools, Radiowaves with leading safety organisations Childnet International and The I in Online and has been supported by Nominet Trust.
