![]() Students at Saltash.net Community School in Cornwall have come up with an innovative and charitable way of learning about social enterprise and the importance of people, planet and profit.
As part of one of Saltash.net’s theme days, 20 Year 9 students have been working together to come up with a social enterprise idea of their own, building on examples they have been given such as The Eden Project in Cornwall and Jamie Oliver’s restaurant, Fifteen.
Led by Deputy Headteacher Dan Roberts, known to many as Chickensaltash on Twitter, the students came up with the idea of producing an e-book – chosen for its environmentally-friendly credentials – to provide advice on using Facebook. The students opted for this topic as a result of the ongoing media discussion about the negative impact of Facebook and social networking, such as during the recent riots.
All profits from sales of the e-book will be
donated to the Action for Children charity
In just three and a half hours, the students produced an e-book, entitled ‘Facebook Epic E-Book – A Guide to Using Facebook in Schools’ which serves as a useful resource for children, teachers, headteachers and parents all over the world.
The e-book covers various aspects of social networking, including:
· How to use Facebook socially
· How to use Facebook for learning
· How teachers can use Facebook in the classroom
· Why headteachers should allow it to be used in schools
· How parents can help protect their child when using Facebook
As the e-book focuses on ways to protect young people online, the enterprising students have decided to donate all of their profits from sales of the £2 e-book to the Action for Children charity.
The students are aiming to sell 50 e-books and have set a target of raising £100. If you would like to support the students’ efforts and a worthwhile charity at the same time, secure your copy of ‘Facebook Epic E-Book – A Guide to Using Facebook in Schools’ by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/SaltashEbook and donating £2. Leave your email address and the team at Saltash.net will send you a copy, it couldn’t be easier!
The students have also produced one minute video clips for each chapter of the e-book which will be released on the saltash.net website over the coming weeks.
