![]() From the 5 to 11 March 2012, the world will compete in the first ever digital Spellathon championships. With the world watching, great prizes and the chance to raise funds for your school and Mencap, this is a competition like no other!
Having existed as a successful paper-based annual fundraising event for Mencap for the last 18 years, Spellathon has been brought up to date by applying online, laptops, mobiles, tablets and interactive whiteboard technologies with state-of-the-art 3D animation in order to reach a global audience.
Launched in its current form in November 2011, Spellathon requires pupils to ask family, friends and carers to sponsor them to spell a pledged target number of words ahead of the championships. Entrants can hone their spelling skills by playing Spellathon online spelling games on their computer, mobile or tablet. All the words that are spelt correctly whilst playing the free games are banked, with scores displayed on the global leader board. Practice is made fun with fast moving, highly visual, free interactive games, playable either at home or at school.
What’s more, Spellathon is presented by The Professor - an amazing 3D bee character voiced by Stephen Fry – and set in a futuristic digital universe where the Spelling Bees guide players through spelling games. Children, students and adults from over 90 countries are already online playing and practising spelling, and many thousands of schools have downloaded the free digital resource pack which contains the interactive Spellathon whiteboard game, an assembly video, pre-populated digital marketing materials and everything else needed to take part in the largest global sponsored spelling competition ever.
Parents are also being encouraged to take part by setting up their own Spelling Bee competition profile and trying their hand at spelling some of the hardest words in the dictionary! All entrants will automatically receive their own JustGiving fundraising page when they create their Spelling Bee profile and, as they practise, they will be raising funds for Mencap and, where applicable, their schools and university unions will also receive 25 per cent of the income fundraised by their students!
Entrants will also have the opportunity to compete live against Stephen Fry in The Reverse Spellathon Challenge, which will be held at the end of February 2012. Stephen will be challenging entrants to compete against him in spelling as many words backwards as they can in 15 minutes. Those who beat Stephen's score will receive a certificate.
As well as raising money for Mencap and schools, Spellathon provides a free resource for teachers and students to practice English spelling in the classroom and at home in a fun and engaging way. A free interactive whiteboard version of Spellathon is available from Promethean Planet and Smart Exchange (Smart Technologies), and last month Mencap launched the free Spellathon iPhone and iPad app which was the number one free educational app over Christmas.
