Channel 4 Learning Clipbank has linked over 220 videos from its English and Maths subject libraries to AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications.

This new development is designed to makes it easier for teachers to integrate Clipbank as a visual element into lessons that support the exam objectives. It also supports independent work by students allowing them to learn at their own pace, revisiting key information as they revise for their exams.

Teachers and students can now find English and Maths resources that support relevant exam board learning objectives quickly with an easy-to-use browse feature. An explanation can be found in the interface, contextualising how each clip supports a particular objective. This is intended to help teachers explore how clips can be directly used to prepare students for their GCSE exams and enable them to personalise their lessons to suit their students’ needs. From students’ point of view, they can create their own tailored revision plans to help them achieve the best results possible.

For example, a search on Clipbank for the Edexcel English Literature (2010) exam objective ‘Unit 1: Understanding Prose’, Section A: Literary Heritage provides the following clips - Charles Dickens: The Early Years, Charles Dickens: The Later Years, Charles Dickens: Legacy.

Visual stimuli have long been acknowledged as an important aid to memorisation and deeper understanding. Channel 4 Learning videos help students to internalise learning by applying real-life scenarios to educational concepts, adding a spark to topics that can be difficult to understand. Each Clipbank video is short enough to be played and repeated, meaning teachers can prepare students for their important exams by supporting all kinds of learning needs.

A short introduction to Clipbank from Channel 4 Learning

Over 3,500 clips in the core subjects of English and Maths have been linked first, with Science, Geography and Business to follow in September 2011. Additional subjects will be rolled out through the 2011/2012 academic year.

Lewis Bronze, CEO of Channel 4 Learning Clipbank, commented:

‘Clipbank has a massive library of top-quality digital resources, built up over years of continuous development. Our exam board link-up project has been quite an undertaking for the Clipbank team but one we feel will bring huge benefits. It will give more help to teachers to extract the most relevant resources to their needs, and of course, save a lot of time in the process! Students can rest assured that they have effective revision tools for core subjects to boost their own achievement and understanding.’

Clipbank is the unique learning service for secondary schools that offers a weekly updated library of thousands of video clips across 16 subjects. In addition to clips, Clipbank provides multimedia activities, web links and tools, planning & curriculum support for teachers and home access for students and teachers. Tests and worksheets can be created in Clipbank and used to assess students, helping to raise achievement levels.
