Award-winning language service, EMAS UK will be hosting a range of training seminars over the coming months to support the teaching of EAL (English as an additional language) pupils.
All sessions are conducted by award-winning managers and trainers and aim to help classroom practitioners to support their non-English speaking learners and those with emerging language skills by providing hints, tips and secrets that work. Furthermore, all attendees will receive £100 worth of free bilingual books on CD!
The first of the seminars will be taking place in Cardiff next month and consists of two sessions. The morning session, which runs from 09:15 to 12:00, is designed for primary classroom teachers and EAL coordinators and focuses on ‘Practice and Pedagogy’. This practical session will examine the pedagogy of learning, combined with the creation of practical resources, and will consider using language modelling and understanding how children develop linguistic links that support cognitive development. The session also looks at understanding the language for learning and the language of learning, as well as developing EAL in special needs and for gifted and talented pupils.
The afternoon session, entitled ‘Supporting EAL learners in the primary classroom’, takes place from 13:15 to 16:15 and is designed for primary classroom teaching and language assistants. This session will focus on practical tips for working with additional language learners (ALL) and how to create bilingual/dual language games and books, as well as looking at the theory of how games work and how to create them. Attendees will have the opportunity to discover practical resources that can be made in seconds, used many times and that support learning at a range of levels.

The following seminars will take place on 8 March 2012 in Boston, Lincolnshire. The morning session will again be designed for primary classroom teachers and EAL coordinators and focus on Practice and Pedagogy.
The afternoon session, which is aimed at headteachers, governors and senior teachers, focuses on ‘The Equality Act 2012’ and has been updated to reflect the Equality Act 2010 which comes into force in April 2012. The Equality Act 2010 has replaced all existing equality legislation such as the Race Relations Act, Disability DiscriminationAct and Sex Discrimination Act. This session will review the Equality Act 2010 and cover schools’ public sector equality duty, including specific duties for schools and actions that they may need to take in order to comply with this Act.
