Throughout October and early November, Britannica is supporting the Children’s Book Festival in Dublin by hosting a competition for teachers throughout Ireland.

Britannica will be working with the Scoilnet education portal and are appealing to teachers’ creative streaks with an interactive competition promoting digital teaching and learning. In a bid to find Ireland’s best school lesson, primary and post-primary teachers are invited to submit an online learning activity to the Scoilnet education portal using Britannica’s interactive online resources.

Teachers in Ireland can win a range of exciting digital software and hardware for themselves and their schools, including iPad2s, interactive classroom technologies and a range of CDs and books.

Recent research from Britannica reveals that the move to digital learning will be one of the key priorities for schools this academic year and, as more classrooms across Ireland are turning digital, the prizes – iPad2s and the latest Promethean and E-instruction technology for classroom-based learning – reflect a push to encourage Irish teachers to embrace the wealth of online Britannica materials available to them via their national portal. These not only enable better communication between pupils, their peers and teachers, but also inspirational, interactive learning throughout classrooms across the UK.

Winners and runners-up for both primary and post-primary will be chosen, and trainee teachers can also participate. An awards ceremony to honour the winners and runners-up will be held in Dublin on 30 November, with guests including the award-winning children’s writer Conor Kostick, who will be presenting prizes and doing a reading.

Commenting on the competition, Conor Kostick said:

“This year, especially because of the difficult economic times we are going through, it’s a great idea to have a competition that reminds us there are many excellent free online resources for schools and libraries, not least Britannica's encyclopaedias. I wish everyone entering Britannica’s competition the best of luck!”
