Through the difficult exam periods, the games based revision system, I am Learning, is proving to be a valuable tool for pupils all over the country.

Schools are seeing a positive impact on attainment and at St Martin’s School in Essex, the school has seen a vast improvement in grades, says teacher, Andrew James. He continues:

‘These are our best results ever and those students who have used I Am Learning as part of their revision schedule have told me how very useful it has been to them.’

Martin Craig, Headteacher at Balby Carr Community Sports and Science College in Doncaster, agrees. He says:

‘This is an easy and accessible package, providing engaging revision activities and important feedback that we know is working for our students.’

I am Learning has teamed up with many popular learning platform providers, most recently Frogtrade. Simon Brown, VLE Co-ordinator at Cramlington Learning Villiage in Northumberland, says:

‘I am Learning has been implemented as part of a major restructure of all e-learning resources. The I am Learning system was added to the schools e-learning toolkit which is powered by Frog in a move which means that once logged into the school’s VLE, students and staff have instant, single sign on access to all online systems, including VLE and MIS services, as well as I am Learning, emails, documents, Micro Library Service and much more besides.

The single username and password system has allowed users easy access to a plethora of tools from a single portal and enhanced participation in each. With the help of Frog, Cramlington Learning Village and I am Learning have developed a Frog widget that manages the single sign on and integration of the two systems, something which has since become available to all schools using Frog and I am Learning.’

The English department at Cramlington Learning Village was the first to test out the I am Learning system. Rachel Johnson, Assistant Headteacher and Head of English says:

‘I am Learning has been a very powerful tool across all ages and abilities at Cramlington Learning Village. The students are engaged, competitive and motivated to get onto the leader board and beat their school friends. The games on I am Learning are enjoyable and fun and the students genuinely learn something from playing them.

One of the best functions of I am Learning is the possibility of making your own games and turning them instantly into an attractive medium for revision.  It is not an exaggeration to say that I am Learning has made a huge difference in English’

Dominic Tester, Assistant Headteacher at Costello Technology College, shares Ms Johnson’s enthusiasm for I am Learning. He comments:

‘I am Learning is a fantastic product that engages and sustains student learning through its rich media environment. Students find it motivational and rewarding, this coupled with detailed reporting and the facility to create customised resources has made for an excellent e-learning addition. We have been really pleased with the level of integration with Frog.’

Parents are also noticing the difference I am Learning can make to their children. The parents of Jack Roberts, a pupil at Maple Primary School in Doncaster, say:

‘I am Learning has been very useful to Jack. We find that it provides him with help and support during the time he is unable to attend school. He particularly enjoys the variety of tasks that are available to him.’

Jim himself agrees. He says:

I am Learning has given me a great learning experience. I love going on the laptop, doing the tasks and seeing what scores I get!’

Mike Rimmer, Assistant Headteacher at Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College in Bradford, believes that implementing I am Learning has closed the gap for pupils from less-privileged backgrounds and has helped to engage learners.

He says:

‘I am Learning has provided Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College with a manageable, interactive resource which has had an impact on our students. Many of our students come from 'hard to reach' families, but having access anytime and anywhere to fantastic engaging resources has helped develop more independent and motivated learners. The feedback we receive on how much time young people have spent revising in specific subject areas has been very useful. Our results over the past three years have shown significant improvement, some of which I am convinced can be put down to the access our learners have had to I am Learning.’

Neil Oldbury, a teacher at Elizabethan High School in Nottingham, also credits I am Learning with taking pupils’ learning beyond the classroom. He says:

‘This is a great website that engages students through the use of games. The activities are linked to subjects and key stages. Activities can be set for homework. Find out how to create your own content and how your classes are progressing’.

I am Learning will be exhibiting at the Frog Learning Platforms Conference on 15 June and at the Cramlington Learning Village ‘Refresh your thinking’ Conference on 25 June.
