This term, bee-it will be following Oakmere Primary School in Herts as they implement online monitoring and assessment system, PIMS by Simply Efficient Software.

After years of monitoring pupil progress through paper-based systems, Oakmere School invited primary school teacher and director of Simply Efficient Software, Julian Barrell, into the school to demonstrate the benefits of using PIMS.

Julian explained how PIMS “simplifies the process of pupil assessment by allowing evidence of pupil attainment to be effortlessly linked to objectives”. Assessment sheets, including APP and EYFS scale points, are automatically generated for each individual, highlighting criteria that have been met. This structured approach to recording and supporting the development of pupils is what attracted Oakmere School to the system.

Evidence of pupils’ work can be linked to objectives

Following the PIMS demonstration, Headteacher Julie Lilly said:

“The system looks excellent, we are all really, really impressed with it. For the trial, we had initially planned on providing access to our Year 5 and 6 teachers however, since the demonstration this morning I may have an issue on my hands as all of our teachers want access!”

Julian believes that statements adapted from the curriculum can only tell a fraction of the story but, by backing up statements of attainment with evidence of learning, both teachers and parents gain a clearer insight into the development of the child. The evidence can be as technical as a video recording of pupils learning or an image of their work, right down to a simple comment to provide additional context or where to find evidence in exercise books.

Julie added:

“We use video quite a lot in school already as it really captures the atmosphere of a lesson and allows you to see children enjoying their learning. I am really looking forward to linking these videos to PIMS and therefore tying evidence of learning to the APP framework.”

Oakmere Primary School will be utilising PIMS over the coming months and bee-it will be there to report on their findings and experiences, so stay tuned!
